If tastes and colors are not discussed, some mistakes in decoration can lead to a lack of harmony and elegance. An interior designer reveals the furniture and objects she would never want in her home and gives her advice on how to replace them.
Decorating tastes are unique to everyone, which is why there are so many styles! Something for everyone: Scandinavian style, industrial, country house, contemporary, minimalist, etc. While some will like clean interiors, others will prefer touches of color.
Successful decoration is not always an easy task! If a few basic rules are to be respected for a top interior (such as light, light or neutral tones, the rule of three colors, etc.), faults in taste are also to be avoided for a harmonious decoration.
Things not to have at home
Nothing better than a pro to help us achieve our interior design and avoid bad taste. Interior designer Jennifer Walter presents the objects she would never put in her home and what she would replace them with for a warm and harmonious interior.
- Wooden signs with a message like “home sweet home”. They are very impersonal and we have seen them too much. What to replace them with then? If you like this panel side, she suggests that you opt for a vintage panel found at a flea market or on Ebay for example. This will give more character to your interior and make it less of a “show house”.
- Too many matching pieces of furniture in the same room: it lacks character and reinforces the impersonal side. We therefore avoid, for example, having the headboard, chest of drawers and wardrobe of the same range in the bedroom to avoid the “hotel room” effect. How do we do ? Why not hunt for a pretty chest of drawers?
- Metal blinds: they give a very cold side to the room. What can we replace them with? We opt for a wooden blind for example, or for a pretty linen curtain. Natural materials provide warmth.
- Poor quality pop’art canvases or landscape photos. What to replace them with? Quality, inexpensive artwork purchased online, such as on Etsy. Nothing better to give a little character to your walls.
- A dated kitchen, like the Tuscan style in earth tones with large tiled floors. How to replace old tiles? For example, a pretty zellige splashback, a good compromise for those who want naturalness in their kitchen.
- School and family photos: yes, but not as the centerpiece of the decoration. Where do we put them? In a nice frame on a bedside table for example.
- Halogen lamps. They pose a fire and burn hazard because the bulbs can become very hot. What are they replaced with? A rattan floor lamp is a good option.
- Different floor coverings in the same room. For the interior designer, it is no problem to put parquet in the living room and tiles in the kitchen. What she strongly advises against is mixing materials in the same room.
- A barn door to cover a large wall. Although the country house trend is in vogue, according to the architect, this type of door is difficult to integrate into your home, and does not go with all types of interior. What do we replace it with? A pretty sliding door.
With all these little tips, you are sure to adopt a decoration that is more up-to-date, more durable but above all more personal. By avoiding clichés and objects seen everywhere, you will give a real personality to your interior and a touch of modernity. Ideal for impressing your friends, seducing your loved ones, creating a pleasant or cozy atmosphere or even winning over future buyers… It’s all good to pay attention to your decor!
