In 2011, cult director David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven) enthusiastically took on a new film: It’s about the first part of the film Stieg Larson’s captivating Millennium Trilogy. The result is an exciting, brutal thriller that will make your blood run cold, and not just because of the northern setting.
This is what the thriller highlight Verblendenung on Netflix is about:
The once successful journalist Michael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) receives an unusual offer: millionaire Hendrik Vanger offers him evidence against a major industrialist who recently destroyed Michael’s reputation as an investigative reporter. In return, Michael should do that to solve the mysterious disappearance of Vanger’s niece Harriet.
On the trail of the missing Harriet, Michael meets the self-confident hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara). Together they penetrate deep into the dark family history of the Vangers – and draw the attention of a dangerous opponent.
Captivating dynamic between ex-Bond Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara
David Fincher stages Stieg Larson’s first part Verblendenung with icy charm (in the original English the film is called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Hacker Lisbeth, hauntingly portrayed by Rooney Mara, is known not only for her sharp mind and quick fists, but also for her tattoos. In doing so, it forms one great contrast to the no less sharp but much more relaxed journalist Michael, played by a good-humored Daniel Craig.
While Craig and Mara immediately harmonize in front of the camera, their characters only come together after some back and forth. This Collision of two worlds Observation is a great strength of the film.
This cold case is not just cold, but frozen
The rapprochement of the main characters is cleverly linked to the investigation of the missing person case. In cool images, the unlikely duo approaches the truth about Harriet Vanger and offers unstoppable build-up of tensionwhich purposefully captivates you.
This cold case is a real challenge because after forty years it has not only become cold, but has essentially frozen. The two main characters have to think of a lot to track down the murderer – and almost have to believe it themselves.
The theme that emerges in the search for Harriet – violence and oppression against women – is also present in Lisbeth’s life. She has to endure a lot of humiliation and (sexualized) violence. The title of the book * translated from Swedish is not for nothing Men who hate women.
However, Lisbeth knows how to defend herself and uses all the means at her disposal. As satisfying as it is to watch Lisbeth on her quest for revenge, it doesn’t change the harshness of the scenes seen before.

So all thriller fans should know that, in addition to convincing main actors and a nerve-wracking plot, the film also has some
explicit scenes of violence which are not for the faint of heart and also contain rape.
Verblingung celebrated its cinema premiere on December 12, 2011 and can currently be seen with a Netflix subscription in Germany.
