Renal calculations affect approximately 15% of the world’s population, with a recurrence rate of just under 50% within 5 years of the first calculation. Very painful, these “pebbles” block the flow of the reins urine to the bladder. This phenomenon causes violent pain in the lumbar region called “nephretic colic”. There are 3 different types of calculations: those made up of calcium, those made up of uric acid, and those with various compositions, linked to genetic or infectious diseases.

A team of American researchers looked at the role of nutrition in the training of kidney stones. They conducted their study for 7 years, on a 61 -year -old patient, who has eliminated approximately 3 kidney stones per year since his 58 years. Its urine has been collected to identify the risk factors linked to its diet. He was advised to follow a diet poor in sodium and non -dairy animal proteins, and to increase his consumption of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. “The objective is to reduce the urinary supersaturation of the types of current calculations, by emphasizing the most common renal calculation type, the calcium oxalate”, explain the researchers in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition”. SUNSATURATION occurs when the minerals present in the urine exceed their solubility, contributing to the formation of calculations. During follow -up, the subject, however, changed its diet to adopt a diet composed of 90% meat, therefore meat.

According to his exams, the patient’s results have deteriorated clearly. “The urine analyzes of our patient demonstrate an accumulated risk of training for kidney stones after the adoption of the carnivorous regime”observed scientists. High consumption of animal proteins and a low calcium intake would therefore be risk factors for the formation of kidney stones. “One of the main reasons for this risk is that the degradation of animal proteins leads to an increase in uric acid and global acid production. This acidic environment offers calcium and uric acid calculations an optimal environment to crystallize”. Towards the end of the follow -up, at 68, the patient had stopped following a carnivorous diet, had no more kidney stones and had no urological symptoms.

“Food intake is an important factor in the etiology of kidney stones. Particular attention must be paid to the consumption of liquids and the contribution of sodium, non -dairy animal proteins, fruits/vegetables, oxalate and calcium”conclude the researchers. Finally, they call for more in -depth studies on the links between the diet of patients and the formation of kidney stones. In general, the recommendations aim to limit its consumption of meat to 500g per week maximum and to vary the sources of animal protein (eggs, meats, fish) and the types of meats (red, white …).
