This horror sequel only came 13 years later to plug

The film Orphan is no longer an insider tip in horror circles. Since its publication in 2009, however, 13 years had to pass before the prequel appeared: Orphan: First Kill.

The crazy part: The horror prequel brought back leading actress Isabelle Fuhrman as the main character, even though she played a child at the time and is now in her mid-20s. And all this just to plug a logic hole in the first film. You can now experience this creepy feat on Sky/WOW *.

Horror reference: Orphan 2 wants to make up for mistakes in the previous film

In the first horror film, Orphan, a childless couple adopted a 9-year-old girl: Little Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) from Estonia turned out to be a far less innocent child than it first appeared. Anyone who knows the eerie twist of the first part will not soon forget it.

A mistake that hit the audience bitterly despite all the love for the twisted horror film: how was Esther came into the system of the American Adoption Board from an Eastern European orphanage without any guardians? Orphan: First Kill builds this narrative bridge with a story set between the flashbacks and the main plot of the first film that explains Esther’s journey.

Orphan: First Kill

The orphan prequel reveals that prior to Esther’s arrival in the Coleman family, there was still her station with the wealthy Tricia Albright (Julia Stiles). She sneaks into their home by posing as their missing daughter, who she looks amazingly like. But if you only expect a gap filler after the surprises of part 1, you are wrong: the new history holds up unexpected twists again ready – even if the horror film ends up picking up where the first film began.

  • Orphan: First Kill rejuvenated the returning leading lady with film tricks

What also made Orphan: First Kill special: The horror prequel brought back Isabelle Fuhrman as the leading actress after 13 years. The actress was 11 years old when Orphan was filmed. She was 23 when Orphan: First Kill was filmed.

The needed one Rejuvenation achieved the prequel through several tricks. According to director William Brent Bell, the team made little use of digital computer effects. Instead, it relied on the use of trick perspectives, makeup, and body doubles, making each take with the main character a challenge.

Of course, the aging of the main actress in Orphan: First Kill cannot be completely hidden. But instead of finding a new child or using a CGI double with limited facial expressions, the sequel went for the variant that made Isabelle Fuhrman the “child” again. Which also works as a tongue-in-cheek meta-commentary on the first film.
