This has not been seen for more than 40 years

ToPo has scored more than 95 points per game this season. The last time a team did more in the women’s premier league was in the 1980–1981 season.

In the Women’s Basketball League, Torpa Pojat can celebrate the Finnish championship today after exceptional basketball performances. The Finnish championship is interrupted for ToPo on its home field in Töölö Kisahalli in the third final against Kotka Peli-Karhu.

ToPo has scored 95.15 points per game this season. According to the statistics of the Swedish Basketball Association, the quote is the highest in the women’s main league for more than 40 years.

The previous time, Nanso from Nokia forged harder points in the women’s SM series. They scored 98.70 points per game in 1980–81. Above all, exceeding 90 points has been rare in recent decades. In the season before Nanso’s listing, Hyvinkää Tahko scored 103.15 points and Nokian Urheilijat scored 99.28 points per match.

After these years, only Forssan Alku and Peli-Karhut have scored more than 90 points per game during one season.

Since the 2017-2018 season in the Men’s Basketball League, the best teams have scored more than 90 points per game. This season, the best quote is Helsinki Seagulls’ 90.24 points per game. However, averages of more than 95 points are rare even in men’s Korisliiga. Tampere’s Pyrintö scored more than 95 points per game in the 2020–2021 season.

Since then, an average of over 95 points has been reached only twice in the 2000s, in the 2001–2002 season Äänekoski Huima and in the 2000–2001 season Espoo Honka.

Freezing crushing wins

Torpa Boys’ women’s team has been quite dominant this season. The team has lost only twice so far.

Of course, such seasons have been seen in the recent past in the women’s Basketball League. Most recently, the current final opponent Peli-Karhut in the 2020–2021 season won the championship, losing only two matches during the season. Before the women’s Korisliiga, Peli-Karhuja was dominated by Lappeenrantan Catz for many years.

Catz won championships in the 2012-2013, 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons, losing only two matches. In the 2013-2014 season, Catz won the championship with only one loss.

Now ToPo also has the opportunity to break PeKa’s dynasty. The people of Kotka have won five championships in a row.

ToPo has been colored by exceptionally wild crushing wins.

Purely based on the regular season readings, ToPo’s point difference was higher compared to the opponents than in the top seasons of Peli-Karhuje and Catz. ToPo outscored opponents by an average of 29 points in the regular season.

In the playoffs, HBA-Märsky was also the opponent in the quarter-finals, but in the semi-finals, so far, this season’s strongest team in the field, i.e. Kouvottaret, was the opponent.

Kouvottaret is so far the only team that has won ToPo this season. It was successful once in the regular season and once in the semifinals as well. The semi-finals of ToPo and Kouvottari were also generally tight contests.

In the opening final, however, ToPo was crushing again. The first game ended with a difference of 46 points for the people from Helsinki. ToPo led the second final match in Kotka with more than 20 points. The game ended with the score 77–97.

How is this possible?

Last year, ToPo lost to Peli-Karhui in the finals, winning 0–3, but the matches were even. The team is definitely hungry from last spring.

Peli-Karhut has suffered from injuries this season, for example, but ToPo has continued with the same body since last year. Ilmar’l Thomas is now the second season in a row the best point scorer in ToPo and the entire league.

Changed to the second American reinforcement for this season Carmen Tyson-Thomas. He was also one of the best scorers in the league in the two previous seasons in Tapiola Honga and Espoo Basket Team.

The domestic frame has also remained intact. ToPosta has two current national team players Sea of heather and Madgalene Agyei as well as one of the Finnish sport legends Taru Tuukkanen.

46-year-old Tuukkanen still shines on domestic basketball courts. Tuukkanen has played the first two finals games with averages of no less than 20 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists.

For ToPo, the championship would be the first in the club’s history in the women’s main league. The last time the women’s Finnish championship went to Helsinki was in 2005–2006, when the Panthers were able to celebrate it.
