This harmless gesture in the kitchen can be expensive up

Do not make this error in the kitchen! This gesture is not without consequences and could require the intervention of a professional.

While the Candlemas approaches, it is always good to make some reminders of good practices in the kitchen to avoid transforming this friendly moment into a nightmare. For example, we do not forget to let the dough rest, we wait for the pan to be very hot, we avoid blowing the pancakes on the ceiling, etc. But did you know that we are a lot to make a mistake when we make pancakes that can cause a much more annoying problem than a pancake that remains stuck at the bottom of the pan?

In the kitchen, we all have habits that seem without consequences. If some simply cause small inconvenience, others, over time, can cause more important problems, such as a completely blocked sink, and require an expensive intervention of a plumber. Among these bad habits, that of throwing remains of pancake dough or other culinary preparations in the sink, a current gesture which should however be banned.

At first glance, pouring pancake dough into the sink may seem harmless. After all, it is a liquid substance, easy to evacuate. However, once in the pipes, the dough does not remain as fluid as you might think.

Jeremy Dague, plumbing expert at Work.comexplains why we should never throw the rest of the pancake dough in the sink. It “contains oil which can quickly gain the pipes. Result: annoying caps and repairs which can exceed 300 euros” he informs.

On the other hand, flour -based pasta, such as those for pancakes or cakes, have a particularity: in contact with water, they form a kind of glue. When this dough accumulates in the pipes, it can join the walls and trap other waste.

“However, it is easy to avoid this kind of problem” explains the plumber. “If you have leftover dough, use them for other recipes or freeze them for later. But above all, never throw them into the sink. It’s bad for your pipes and for sewers” continue -he.

This problem does not only concern the remains of pancake dough. Never throw in the sink other current foods such as sauces, meat juice, cooking oil. By cooling, liquids freeze and can completely plug the pipes. Also pay attention to the custard which can leave a sticky coating on the piping if you throw it in the sink.

What can you do in case of error? Start by pouring very hot water immediately, for several minutes. The hot water will dissolve the dough to run it to the sewers and thus avoid plug your pipes. You can also add a little dishwashing liquid to help remove residues. Avoid at all costs to use cold water, it could immediately freeze the pancake dough.
