Do you want to reduce your fine lines and wrinkles? A drink much appreciated by the French would help fight against the visible signs of skin aging.
Lifting, botox, collagen treatment… While many solutions exist to prevent wrinkles, dark spots and other visible signs of aging, few actually work. However, Chinese researchers claim that an “everyday” drink could limit the oxidative stress that causes skin aging.
A drink rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory molecules
It’s in the magazine “Journal of cosmetic dermatology“that scientists from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing have highlighted for the first time the beneficial effects of coffee on aging.
According to a press release relayed by Expression Groupe, coffee would in fact be associated with a reduction in “risk of skin aging.
To carry out this work, the scientists relied on a Mendelian randomization method which consists of using the genetic data of the participants. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) was the main method of MRI analysis, supplemented by other methods (MR-Egger, weighted median, single mode and weighted mode).
“Using this method, scientists were able to analyze the effect of coffee on the skin cells of a very large population from the UK Biobank which brings together the genetic and physiological data of almost half a million of British“, the press release further specifies.
Result ? Coffee seems to have a particular impact on the skin, due to its great richness in “antioxidants and anti-inflammatory molecules“.
These elements would in fact make it possible to limit oxidative stress promoting the aging of the skin.
“Our results revealed that genetically predicted higher coffee consumption reduced the risk of facial skin aging“, explain the researchers.
Caffeine, a particularly beneficial component
What’s more, caffeine – this chemical compound naturally present in coffee – could also help maintain youthful skin.
“This promotes the production of telomerase, which could have the effect of limiting telomere degradation. In doing so, caffeine would therefore be beneficial for these genetic shields which naturally degrade over time and can no longer effectively protect the genetic material of skin cells.“, the press release said.
For researchers, despite the fact that “confounding factors” may have influenced the results of the study; they nevertheless offer new perspectives for the future.
