A father succeeded in making his 10-year-old son prefer books to screens. In a TikTok video, he explains how he did it.
Between tablets, phones and video games, today’s children are constantly exposed to screens. And they love it. However, to develop your vocabulary and improve your spelling, there is nothing like reading. How can you make your child want to pick up a book, rather than their game console?
A dad explains his trick in a TikTok video
A father, named Armando, explains the trick that allowed his 10-year-old son to love books more. He thus publishes a short video of a few seconds where we can see the boy absorbed in his reading. In his comment, the man wrote: “We are so happy to have our son Raya. I think he read more books than me.”.
Similarly, sitting in his car, the man films his son reading. “Give them books instead of phones when they are little and this is the result. You will thank me later” he revealed.
Celebrate reading, rather than screens
How does the man explain his son’s passion for reading? According to him, the key lies in having explained to his son, then very young, the importance of it. Questioned by the media Newsweek, he details what he was able to show his child. “My wife and I firmly believe in the power of literature to broaden the mind and nourish the creativity“ first explains Armando, who is a teacher and writer. For him, “it was about leading by example and creating a nurturing environment where reading was celebrated.”
“We made sure to offer him a wide range of books that matched his interests and encouraged him to explore different genres.” explains the father of the family.
So it all depends on the age of your child, but if he is small, you can encourage him to look through books appropriate for his age and read him stories. For older children, it will be more a matter of accompanying them to the library or a bookstore, to choose the books that they like. To do like Armando and his companion, that is to say “prioritize reading over phone use“.
