Experts from the specialized magazine 60 million consumers are formal!

In recent years, electric and hybrid cars have multiplied on roads and parking lots, alongside more traditional vehicles. You only have to look at the figures: at the end of 2023, France crossed the symbolic threshold of the million electric vehicles registered. It is a small revolution, especially for those who have it. Indeed, this car model introduces new uses and new habits to be taken, in particular with regard to recharge. In town or in smaller municipalities, more and more charging stations are installed. They are useful for many, but not for everyone. Because yes, some make the choice to recharge their vehicle at home. And this is where problems can arise.

Indeed, in the issue of specialized magazine 60 million consumers (n ° 609, January 2025), the experts looked at the subject of electric car recharges at home. For this, they interviewed around 350 owners and the majority of them effectively connect their vehicle at home, on a socket. But then, what catch? “In 42% of cases, this is a classic socket”, Can we read in their investigation. A priori, nothing alarming, and yet … “The recharge of a vehicle can cause overheating of the electrical circuit, especially on old installations, with a real risk for safety”, Point experts from 60 million consumers.

To avoid any risk, it is strongly advised to buy a specific reinforced socket to recharge an electric vehicle. “Coupled with a differential circuit breaker, it limits the risks of overvoltage and delivers a power of 3.7 kW which divides by two, on average, the recharge duration”explain our colleagues. Another option: have a charging station installed directly by an electrician specializing in IRVE (charging infrastructure for electric vehicles), which is recommended for motorists who make a lot of kilometers on a daily basis.
