According to recent studies, cosmetic surgery and medicine procedures are enjoying great success. One of them in particular is popular with both women and men.
The latest report from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that between 2021 and 2022, breast augmentations jumped 29% and botulinum toxin injections increased 26.1%.
The most popular cosmetic procedure in the world
And it is indeed the botulinum toxin injection that is the most popular operation, all sexes and age groups combined. In 2022, 9.2 million injections were performed, including 7.8 million for women and 1.4 million for men. Botulinum toxin injections are ahead of hyaluronic acid injections (4.3 million), liposuction (2.3 million), breast augmentation (2.2 million), permanent hair removal (1.8 million), eyelid surgery (1.4 million), abdominoplasty (1.2 million), breast lift (955,026), chemical peel (844,616) and non-surgical fat reduction (777,716).
Botulinum toxin: what are its effects on the skin?
Botulinum toxin injections can temporarily reduce expression lines, such as frown lines or crow’s feet, for up to six months. But they can also lift drooping eyebrows, combat excessive sweating, reduce pain from osteoarthritis of the thumb and even relieve chronic migraines.
So how does this toxin work? It “blocks the muscle by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for the passage of information between the nerve and the muscle”specifies the French Society of Dermatology.
To date, botulinum toxin is the number one cosmetic procedure performed across all generations.
