It is timeless.
Board games have regained color in recent years. Strategy, card, atmospheric, investigation games… More and more French people are rediscovering the pleasure of opening a game board and sitting around a table for a moment of sharing, conviviality but above all “play”. Because that’s also why adults love board games. For the pleasure of “playing” like when they were children.
In 2023, the board game market in France achieved a turnover of 680 million euros, reports the site Solitaire.net during a study carried out to list the favorite board games of the French. To carry out this study, they collected and analyzed search volumes for various board games on Google. As a basis for the investigation, they used lists of board games available on sites specializing in the sale of board games. Data was collected in November 2024.
Upon arrival, they reveal the 25 most popular board games with French Internet users. Among them, La Bonne Paye, Docteur Maboul, Dobble, Gagne ton papa!, Kluster, Cluedo, Qui est-ce?, Puissance 4 and Uno. On third place on the podium, the Skyjo party game; in second place the essential Monopoly and in first place, the famous and timeless Scrabble. Almost 70 years after being marketed for the first time in France (January 19, 1955), this great classic of word games continues to appeal to the French. As a reminder, its objective is simple: place words on a board and achieve as many points as possible.
This is a great game to help children develop their vocabulary and practice their spelling as well as for adults. It is also recommended as we age, particularly against Alzheimer’s disease since it combines strategy and memory, according to Alzheimer Foundation. “Beyond these fun and social virtues, games are excellent for the brain: they stimulate attention, concentration, memory and learning but also the pleasure and motivation to learn. This is an excellent way to maintain and preserve brain power while preventing Alzheimer’s disease.”
Other games are recommended by the Foundation such as the Dixit© card game, the Profiler© game, the Imagine© game, the Cortex© puzzle game, or even Memory©. It’s up to you to choose the one your elders prefer, you still have a little time to be ready for the holidays.
