From July 1, millions of French people will be impacted by this increase, which promises to be very significant.
In a few weeks, the French wallets will once again be put to the test. From July 1, one expenditure item will undergo a significant increase of 11.7%, compared to the month of June. This is a bill that concerns many households, given that it is directly linked to their housing. In fact, on average it will be necessary to spend 129.20 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) all taxes included, compared to 115.70 euros/MWh in June for the price of gas, the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) announced. in a statement on June 10.
However, “even if this tariff is up by 13.50 euros compared to June, it remains lower by 4.70 euros/MWh including tax”, which represented the average tariff on January 1, 2024, a decrease of 3.5% since the start of the year, specifies the CRE. Clearly, the annual bill including tax for an average consumer will reach 1184 euros, compared to 1127 euros under January conditions.
But how can we explain such an increase in July? Since June 30, 2023, regulated gas sales prices have been eliminated, recalls the Energy Regulatory Commission. To replace them, the CRE set up the Gas Sales Reference Price (PRGV), which allows consumers to also compare the different offers from suppliers. This famous tariff is updated every month and includes a subscription as well as a price per kilowatt hour, which reflects the costs of purchase, storage, distribution, and supplier margins.
This 11.7% increase in the PRGV, which will take effect in July, is mainly explained by the revaluation of tariffs for the use of natural gas distribution networks, which will increase by 27.5% on average in July 1. According to CRE estimates, bills should have increased by only around 5.5% for customers using gas for heating and by 10.4% for those using it for hot water and/or heating. kitchen. However, the increase was much greater due to “the increase, noted in recent weeks, in natural gas prices on wholesale markets, and the slight increase in the Energy Saving Certificates (EEC) component between July 2023 and July 2024”, details the organization.
