No more batteries that we all know. Italian scientists seem to have invented the battery of the future! By their composition, they would make it possible to avoid certain risks, particularly among children. Time magazine even awarded it the title of best invention of the year.
Batteries, we never have enough. For the remote control that falls apart, to operate a new toy or bring our children’s old toy cars back to life… But they also present a risk of suffocation for toddlers if ingested. Every year, in fact, as the end-of-year holidays approach, the High Authority of Health alerts parents to the risks of button batteries. But an invention from a group of Italian scientists could well revolutionize our daily lives, while reducing the risks for children. This new generation of batteries is even one of the “best inventions of the year” 2023 according to Time magazine.
It is its composition that makes these batteries an incredible innovation since they are edible batteries. Researchers at the Milan Institute of Technology have developed the first ever food battery, created from components such as almonds, capers, algae and beeswax. For it to function, the battery will draw on vitamin B2 from almonds, but also on quercetin from capers which can then release an electrical charge.
If it were to be ingested by a child, the battery could then be easily digested, without this representing any risk as is currently the case. And that’s not all: these edible batteries are also intended for certain medical devices that we ingest, such as biosensors or mini cameras that we introduce into the body to observe the digestive tract. These edible batteries are also edible for animals, if they were to be thrown into nature. Ecological batteries therefore, which could well become the new batteries of tomorrow!
