Fans of Peaky Blinders – Gangs of Birmingham can no longer imagine the series without Cillian Murphy these days. From start to finish the BBC production starred the Irish actor as a war veteran turned crime lord Tommy Shelby to see.
That wasn’t planned from the start though, as Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight actually wanted one other big action star instead of Murphy occupy.

Jason Statham was first to star in Peaky Blinders
The 2020 showrunner told Esquire that ahead of the Peaky Blinders production, he met with Cillian Murphy and Jason Statham in Los Angeles to discuss the role of Tommy Shelby. Here he immediately wanted to choose the action star:
One of the reasons was that Jason is physically in space Jason. Of course, Cillian when you meet him isn’t Tommy, but I was stupid enough not to understand that.
Murphy himself then contacted Steven Knight again to be on the safe side:
He sent me [später] an SMS with the message: ‘Remember I’m an actor’which is absolutely correct because he can transform.
It was precisely Murphy’s acting quality that ultimately ensured that Tommy became such a multi-layered figure has become. In any case, Knight was so convinced after the actor’s text message that he turned down Jason Statham.
On Netflix you can recently final 6th season Stream Peaky Blinders. After the end of the series, Steven Knight is shooting another film that will finally conclude the story about Tommy Shelby.
