There are films that sometimes deserve nothing other than to blow their minds. However, the sci-fi epic Valerian – The City of a Thousand Planets contained everything that box office cucumbers like Battleship or Terminator: Dark Fate don’t have: passion, originality and wealth of detail. Today Valerian is on TV.
Valerian told an epic sci-fi story with an insane budget
The plot: In the 28th century, part of the universe has merged. On the gigantic space station Alpha, countless different species live in a very small space. Of course there is not always harmony.
One day, the special agents of the human federation Valérian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are assigned a secret mission by Commander Arun Filitt (Clive Owen): they are supposed to maintain peace in the universe. Among other things, they meet the shape-shifter Bubble (Rihanna). But a larger conspiracy appears to be underway that will test Valérian and Laurelin’s loyalty.

The box office result: Valerian consumed a production budget of around $180 million. This compares to worldwide box office receipts of just $215 million. In order not to make a loss, the film would probably have had to gross at least 400 million. Because sales and marketing are not yet included in the production costs.
The template: Valerian is based on the French comic series Valérian and Laureline *, which produced 24 volumes and other stories over more than five decades. The franchise had potential that was at least close to that of Star Wars. The defeat at the box office nipped plans for additional films in the bud.
