Diabetes is a disease that is very common in the world and plays an important role in the formation of fatal diseases. Proper nutrition is very important in order to control this disease. According to a recent study published in Nature Medicine, an estimated 14 million cases of type 2 diabetes are caused by malnutrition. Foods that are harmful for diabetes have been explained.

TYPE 2 DIABETES INCREASE

A press release said the increase in type 2 diabetes cases meant “an increased burden on individuals, families and health systems.” Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin, inhibiting the body’s ability to regulate sugar and use it as fuel.

184 COUNTRIES REVIEWED

In the new study, researchers at Tufts University analyzed the diets of 184 countries around the world using data from 1990 and 2018, and found that more than 70% of new diagnoses in 2018 were believed to be due to unhealthy eating patterns.

FOODS THAT INCREASE THE RISK OF DIABETES

Diets devoid of whole grains or containing too much refined rice, wheat, or processed meat were linked to the disease. Excessive juice consumption or those containing insufficient amounts of non-starchy vegetables, nuts, or seeds also had some, if not all, effect on diagnoses.

DIABETES RISK VARIES ACCORDING TO NUTRITION

The research focused on 11 dietary factors and concluded that three had a troubling effect on increasing diabetes diagnoses. “Our study shows that low-carb quality is the leading driver of type 2 diabetes attributed to diet worldwide, with significant variations by country and time,” said senior author Dariush Mozaffarian.

The analysis also found that poor diet led to greater rates of chronic disease diagnoses among men versus women, young versus older adults, and urban and rural residents.

THERE IS NO TREATMENT FOR DIABETES

All 184 countries included in the study reported an increase in type 2 diabetes over the nearly 30 years analyzed. There is no cure for diabetes, but there are numerous lifestyle changes recommended to help manage the condition, such as losing weight, exercising, and eating well.

“These new findings reveal critical areas for national and global focus to improve nutrition and reduce the devastating burdens of diabetes.” The analysis also found that poor diet led to greater rates of chronic disease diagnoses among men versus women, young versus older adults, and urban and rural residents. Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia were found to have the highest incidences of diet-related type 2 diabetes.

This is likely due to data from countries such as Poland and Russia, where diets are reported to contain high amounts of red meat, processed meat and potatoes, the researchers said.
