Police Chief Bernardino Rafael stated in his statement that the riot was triggered by anti-government protests outside the prison. Rafael stated that 1,534 prisoners escaped, 33 people died and 15 people were injured in clashes with guards outside the prison. Rafael later stated that 150 prisoners were captured. Stating that there were escape attempts in two more prisons, Rafel said, “As Mozambicans and security forces, we are worried. We expect an increase in the crime rate in the next 48 hours.”
It was learned that the prisoners neutralized the guards, confiscated their AK-47 rifles and managed to escape from the prison.
ELECTION RESULTS MADE CONFUSION ON THE STREETS
The ruling Daniel Chapo won the presidential election held in Mozambique on October 9. Chapo came first with 65 percent of the votes, while his rival Mondlane received 24 percent of the votes. Since the elections were held, Mondlane’s supporters have been protesting the election results, alleging fraud.
While 21 people lost their lives in the violence that broke out on Monday and Tuesday, the number of deaths had increased to 151 since October 21.
