JAXA reported that 4 thousand 127 people applied for the astronaut recruitment announcement, which was given for the first time in 13 years, and this number was recorded as a record.

The applicants included 811 people under the age of 20 and 69 people over the age of 60. 919 of the total number of candidates are women.

The recruitment process of the candidates, who will be subject to the 4-stage exam regulation after the first screening, will conclude in February 2023.

JAXA aims to send its new personnel on lunar exploration missions with the International Space Station (ISS).

“We hope that people with extraordinary skills will be selected and take part in lunar exploration,” said Suematsu Shinsuke, Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

THEY RETIRE AT THE AGE OF 60

With the average age of its active-duty astronauts over 52, JAXA retires its staff at 60.
