They looked at me like I was crazy

Hardly any role is as coveted as James Bond. In the early 2000s, probably every actor who reasonably fit the profile applied for the iconic part when restarting Casino Royale. In addition to Henry Cavill, this also included Sam Worthington, who was at the beginning of his Hollywood career.

Before he became a blockbuster star thanks to Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans and Avatar, Worthington tried his luck at the James Bond casting. Worthington recently guest-starred on Australian radio show Fitzy & Wippa and shared some details about his failed auditions.

Before Avatar success: Sam Worthington failed the James Bond audition

Like any other actor who auditions for James Bond, Worthington had to play a scene from From Russia with Love.

You go in, there is a young woman in bed, you seduce her. I was able to convey the killer in Bond pretty well, but the charm I didn’t get it at all. I couldn’t seduce her. The suit just didn’t fit.

For Worthington, who is Australian, the accent was the main problem. But even beyond that, his vision did not match the Bond he was looking for.

I tried to do a British accent. I told them I had one white tuxedo like Roger Moore want to wear. I wanted to bring back kung fu moves and they looked at me like I was crazy.

However, he was given a second chance. Nevertheless, he could not convince those responsible. Instead, Worthington now leads the Avatar series.

It was awful. I sounded like Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins. I remember how [Regisseur] Martin [Campbell] said, ‘Try again with your normal voice. All is well.’

At the big Bond casting in the 2000s, Daniel Craig, who embodied the secret agent five times, was able to prevail. He said goodbye to the role in 2021 with No Time to Die. Since then the question has been who will be the next Bond. Most recently, Bullet Train star Aaron Taylor-Johnson emerged as the favorite.
