The breakthrough in the investigation came when they enlisted the help of the genealogist Peter Sjölundwho, with the help of DNA from Daniel Nyqvist, was able to call in the perpetrator. Sjölund has described how it was a positive, but also strange, experience to have contributed to the case being solved.
– Especially when I met relatives and understood how incredibly affected they were by this crime. Not only from the loss of his family member, but also from the great uncertainty that they lived in during 16 long years when the crime was never solved, he has told The Express.

Daniel Nyqvist confessed to the double murder in Linköping
Daniel Nyqvist confessed to the double murder after the arrest and was sentenced to forensic psychiatric treatment with a special discharge examination. This is because Nyqvist, both at the time of the murder and later, was found to suffer from a serious mental disorder.
“Despite the fact that Daniel Nyqvist committed the acts under the influence of a serious mental disorder, and thus after seeing an internal image that made him feel compelled to kill, the district court considers that the circumstances were so serious that the acts are to be judged as murder” , can be read in the judgment as News24 took part in.

Mohamad Ammouri fell victim to Daniel Nyqvist
One of those who fell victim to Daniel Nyqvist that October morning was eight years old Mohammad Ammouriwho was on his way to school when he was attacked by the perpetrator.

When Nyqvist was arrested, the father commented on the whole thing in an interview with the newspaper.
– We are happy and sad at the same time. This is good not only for us, but for everyone in Sweden. It is unusual to find someone after 16 years, he said then and continued:
– We have lost our son, he is not coming back.
In connection with the trial had Elisabeth Massi Fritzwho was the Ammouri family’s plaintiff’s assistant, claimed 950,000 kroner in damages. The Linköping district court granted SEK 350,000 in damages, which was to be distributed between six family members.

“There is also no compensation that can replace their suffering.”
Anna-Lena Svensson became Daniel Nyqvist’s second victim
The second victim was the 56-year-old language teacher Anna-Lena Svensson. She was on her way to work when she was attacked by Daniel Nyqvist on Åsgatan.
– This is a very quiet area, it could have happened to anyone. She was obviously in the wrong place at the wrong time, a neighbor told Aftonbladet after the double murder.

– The doctor announces very correctly, formally, that Anna-Lena has passed away. Then it feels like there was total chaos. In that situation, we have to fend for ourselves, her husband told in “Crime of the Week” on SVT, according to The evening paper.
