Photojournalist Pascal Maitre works for prestigious French and international magazines, such as Geo, National Geographic, Paris Match Or Le Figaro Magazine. His exhibition in Perpignan is entitled “Charcoal: the black gold of the poor”. This is a report he produced in 2021 for Le Figaro Magazine. To do this, he traveled to the DRC, Somalia, Benin and Cambodia. In these countries, charcoal is the only fuel available to the majority of the population for cooking. Worldwide, some 2.5 billion people depend on this product. But the consequences are often dramatic; this fuel is a major source of pollution, poisoning and deforestation.

DRC, 2021. Kinshasa, N'Djili district. The Pascal market is the largest charcoal market in the capital. In Congo, charcoal is called “makala” (coal in Swahili).
