Speaking at the press conference held at the UN’s headquarters in New York, Secretary General Antonio Guterres made statements about President Mohamed Bazoum.
When asked about Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, Guterres said: “I spoke to President Bazoum yesterday. I don’t know exactly where he is, but he was detained. He told me he was fine, but he said the situation was very serious. So today is not just for his immediate release. “I have made very strong calls for the re-establishment of democratic institutions,” he said.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In Niger, located in the west of Africa, the army announced on state television that it had seized the administration and stated that Niger President Mohamed Bazoum was detained.
Niger Foreign Minister Massoudou said in a statement on the subject, βThe coup attempt continues in Niger. This action by the officers, as elsewhere, aims to question our hard-won freedoms, democracy and progress. This adventure with disastrous goals will fail because it will go against the cry of democratic forces and progress all over Niger. I call on all democrats, all patriots to defeat this adventure that poses dangers for our country. Long live democracy, long live Niger.β
“Hard-won gains will be preserved,” Bazoum said on his social media account. All Nigerians who love democracy and freedom will see it.β
