According to the various statistics from the start of the season, this French club would be the worst in Europe.
We are only at the very beginning of the season in the various foreign football championships and in particular in the five biggest, in France, England, Italy, Spain and Germany, but trends are already emerging on the teams who started the 2024-2025 financial year the best.
Bad news, French clubs haven’t really had the wind in their sails since August, even if one club is surviving once again. According to the statistics site WhoScored, PSG is the best team at the start of the season with a rating of 7.01, established by averaging possession, shots, goals, fouls, goals conceded, etc. The French champion club is ahead of Bayern Munich, Liverpool and even Arsenal, who nevertheless beat the Parisians a few days ago in the Champions League.
On the other hand, if Paris is at the top of the bill, another French club arrives at the bottom of this ranking. These are the Saint-Etienne Greens, back in Ligue 1 this season after several years in Ligue 2. Still according to the same statistician, ASSE has the worst overall rating with an average of 6.25 out of the 96 teams recorded before the weekend of October 5, 2024.
Several elements explain this poor performance, such as the number of fouls per match, which is very high with more than 15 fouls on average. Then come repeated offsides, more than two per match and a very high number of shots conceded, more than 17 on average since the start of the season, which makes Saint-Etienne one of the worst defenses of the season in Europe. It is also the worst defense in Ligue 1 with Montpellier despite its goalkeeper’s 3.7 saves each day.
Conversely, the Stéphanois do not strike many shots on goal with less than 10 strikes per match on average for only 3 shots on target. This is why Saint-Etienne has only been able to score three small goals in just 6 Ligue 1 matches this season, making it, again, one of the worst in Europe.
Good news all the same for Saint-Etienne, there are worse than it in Ligue 1 and in Europe when the club plays at home since Angers, Le Havre and more surprisingly, Reims (in the top 5 of Ligue 1) , are ahead of the Greens. It is the away statistics which clearly condemn the Greens to this ranking.
