Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in his congratulatory message, stated that they overcame many difficulties last year and wished all Ethiopians happiness in the new year.
Ethiopia, which welcomes the new year on September 11 or 12 every year, will enter 2016 tomorrow. All official institutions in the country will have a New Year’s holiday tomorrow.
The government also coincided with the start of the new year this year, with the Hedasi Dam, one of the country’s largest economic projects, being completely filled.
The first day of the year, known as “Enkutataş”, is considered to be the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the harvest period.
7 YEARS 8 MONTHS DIFFERENCE…
According to the Gregorian calendar, the Ethiopian calendar, which is 7 years and 8 months behind and based on the Sun, is used in all official affairs by the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia as well as being a religious calendar.
In Ethiopia, which also uses a different time system, the day starts at 06:00, not 00:00. A day consists of two different parts of 12 hours, the first time period starts at 06.00 and the second period starts at 18.00.
While 12 months in the Ethiopian calendar consist of 30 days, there is a 13th month of 5 to 6 days after the 12th month in the calendar. According to this calendar, the new year is entered on September 11 or 12. (AA)
