For the French, the first measure to take to improve road safety consists of reviewing the layout of certain public spaces and developing ever safer road infrastructures.
Rethinking the layout and equipment of infrastructure would be the best way to improve road safety for 36% of French people surveyed, according to a study published by Dekra, a specialist in technical inspection. The importance of reviewing certain road and urban facilities also comes from the fact that respondents consider that if cities are today perfectly adapted to the circulation of cars (77%) and pedestrians (75%), it is already less the case for bicycles (61%) and especially for people with reduced mobility (40%).
Ideally, to limit the risk of collision, public spaces should be perfectly accessible to everyone, in complete safety. However, today, all the devices present in public space can be improved in order to increase their efficiency, from cycle paths to signposts.
On the other hand, 28% of respondents recommend providing more training to different road users (28%). Indeed, for a vast majority of French people (81%), inappropriate behavior such as excessive speed or driving while drunk is conducive to accidents. Next comes lack of concentration (75%), often linked today to the use of the telephone, and aggressive driving (59%). This is why it will also be necessary to change certain behaviors to limit the risk of accidents.
Promoting technological progress (14%) is also another avenue to follow according to this study. If on-board driver assistance systems are already judged positively, the emergence of artificial intelligence in traffic flow management can only improve the situation. An experiment in this direction is already being carried out by Google’s Green Light project. This program already uses AI to optimize the proper functioning of traffic lights at certain intersections in several large cities, all over the world.
Finally, fatalistic, 21% of French people also admit to having no solution to combat road accidents.
This study was carried out by Opinionway for Dekra on October 2 and 3, 2024, using the quota method, on a representative sample of 1,044 people aged 18 and over.
