The box office battle rages on in 2023. After complicated years for cinemas due to the coronavirus pandemic, cinema is picking up in France. We are already halfway through this year, and several films have already achieved good scores at the box office in France. Be careful though, the end of 2023 will be rich in releases (Dune part 2, The Hunger Games 5, Oppenheimer, Barbie, Assignment Impossible 7…), but some feature films are already at the top of this first half of the year and promise to obtain nice positions among the biggest successes of the year, when the results are established in December.
As of June 27, 2023, it is an animated film which is at the top of the box office in France. Super Mario Bros. the film (released in April 2023) achieves, for the moment, the highest entry score of this beginning of the year 2023, with 7.14 million viewers. Two French films then complete the podium to date: Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom by Guillaume Canet (released in February 2023), which attracted 4.60 million spectators in theaters, and Alibi.com 2 by Philippe Lacheau (released in February 2023) which follows not far behind, with 4.27 million spectators.
What are the other films that have made the most entries at the box office? In the rest of the classification, we find Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 (3.38 million admissions, release in May 2023), The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan (3.32 million admissions, released in April 2023), Creed III (2.29 million admissions, released in March 2023), Fast X (2.24 million admissions, released in May 2023), Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania (1.59 million admissions, released March 2023). This top 10 is supplemented, for the time being, by The little Mermaid (1.53 million admissions, released end of May 2023) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (1.52 million admissions, released May 31, 2023).
To put these figures into perspective, among the films released in 2022, two films achieved insane figures at the French box office: Avatar 2 (14 million spectators, spread out until March 21, 2023) and Top Gun: Maverick (6.6 million spectators). Far behind, Minions 2 is the third film with the most admissions in 2022, with 3.9 million spectators. It is therefore quite possible that films released at the beginning of 2023 will rise in the rankings, or be dethroned by a feature film from the second half of the year. We will have to wait until the end of 2023 to take stock.
