These films are showing in Cannes

It is the most important film festival on earth. World cinema and Hollywood meet every year in Cannes in the south of France, where at the end of the festival Palme d’Or for Best Film waiting in competition. Last year the prize went to Anatomy of a Case with Sandra Hülser. But who can grab prizes and the spotlight on the Croisette this year?

Today the films in the program of the 77th Cannes Film Festival were announced and there are a whole list of big names among them. Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola checks in with his Science fiction film Megalopolis back in cinemas, while Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos is already introducing his next film with Emma Stone: Kinds of Kindness.

The Mad Max film Furiosa and Kevin Costner’s Horizon are playing out of competition

The large-format Hollywood cinema is also represented on the Croisette. After films like Top Gun: Maverick premiered in Cannes in recent years, George Miller returns to the Croisette with his apocalyptic play Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Its predecessor, Mad Max: Fury Road, began its critical success in Cannes in May 2015. This time Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth are going on a hunt or two.

To the on most anticipated films of the year – at least among people with an affinity for Westerns – belongs to Horizon. Kevin Costner’s first of two parts, which will be released in cinemas later this year, will have its world premiere in Cannes. Did all the drama surrounding his Yellowstone schedule pay off?

The generations meet in the Cannes competition

By the way, Horizon has no chance of winning the Palme d’Or because of its section, but the air is likely to be thin in the competition.

In addition to veterans like Coppola, Cronenberg and Paul Schrader, the program features the next generations of festival darlings, above all Florida Project director Sean Baker, colleague Andrea Arnold, Jia Zhang-ke from China and Revenge director Coralie Fargeat, whose jump into the competition can only be welcomed.

And we haven’t even touched on the side sections where new works from Holy Motors director Leos Carax and Hong Kong’s rising genre star Soi Cheang are hidden.
