On film sets, it is common to see counterfeit bills. If they are only intended for fiction, this fictitious currency called “Movie Money” has already claimed several victims in Rennes.
If you are used to having cash in your wallet, especially banknotes, you will need to be extra vigilant. Indeed, in the cinema industry, for the purposes of a film, directors sometimes make a request to production designers to obtain fairly realistic fake tickets. This counterfeit currency is normally used by actors to play certain scenes. Concretely, they are nothing more and nothing less than cinema accessories. In the jargon, we speak more of “movie money”.
Except that these posts are sometimes so realistic that they can deceive any person who does not come from a cinema background. It is precisely this detail which would have given certain criminals the idea to set up a scam, which is not so recent and which is called the movie money scam. Recently, it caused a few victims in France, in Rennes. The local police shared a prevention message for traders and citizens on their X page. The denominations in circulation are mainly counterfeit 20 and 50 euro notes. They are sold for a ridiculous price on the Internet. Proof in pictures:

How to recognize counterfeit money? According to law enforcement, certain clues make it possible to identify whether or not it is a counterfeit note. Often, there is the mention “movie money” written under the European flag, or the mention “PROP” which translates as “accessory”. There is also no colored safety hologram, nor the black safety wires. Finally, if you pay attention to the touch, the texture of the paper is not the same as real bank notes. According to the Central Office for the Suppression of Counterfeiting (OCRFM), this phenomenon is far from new. France would also be the first country affected by this scourge in Europe.
