The qualifying limits for the field sports of the World Athletics Championships were published on Thursday. Sports expert Jaakko Ojaniemi describes that the limits follow the trend of recent years. According to him, they ensure that no more than 12 athletes would make it to the final competition.
– You hardly have to cross these limits again this year to get to the final. It is very rare that 12 athletes would cross the qualification limit.
Ojaniemi says that eight Finns will be seen in the field sports finals: the javelin throwers Oliver Helander, Toni Kuusela, Lassi Etelätalo and Anni-Linnea Alanenpole vaulters Wilma Murto and Elina Lampelaa pot thrower Silja Kosonen and a high jumper Ella Junnila.

One of Finland’s biggest medal hopes, pole vaulter Wilma Murro, has to overcome a height of 465 in order to secure a place in the finals. Last year, a result of 450 was required for the WC final.
– Murto will definitely make it to the final. Elina Lampela also has good opportunities. Saga Andersson the record is the 450 required last year, so a place in the finals requires a really good success.
The qualifying limit for the men’s sculls is 580, last year they reached the final with a score of 575. Finns Urho Kujanpää and Juho Alasaaren will likely have to leapfrog their record if they want to make the finals.
Finns to the finals of throwing events
In the javelin throw, getting to the finals requires quite a bit of fighting: for men, an 83-meter throw, and for women, you should reach 61.50 meters. Expert Ojaniemi reminds us that in the last World Championships, a result of 80.03 was enough for the men’s final.
– For example, Oliver Helander’s basic level this year has been such that he has a good chance of crossing the border. Toni Kuusela and Lassi Etelätalo can also reach the final with a good foundation.
In last year’s World Championships, 59.06 was required to reach the final in the women’s javelin. Ojaniemi believes that Anni-Linnea Alanen will also be seen in the final.
– Alanen’s result level this season – and especially in the last month before the World Championships in Budapest – is good enough.
In the women’s moukari, the eyes turn to Silja Kosose, whose season’s top result is 73.78. The qualifying limit for this year’s World Championships is 73 meters, but the last place in the finals in Eugene was grabbed with a result of 70.87.
– Kosonen doesn’t need to do anything amazing, just a basic throw like that is enough for the final. Summer in Koski has a reasonable chance, although of course he has to throw his record (71.10) around. From Krista Tervolta hard success is required.
In the men’s moukari, the qualifying limit is 77 meters. Last year, the final competition was reached with a throw of 74.67 meters. Ojaniemi estimates that Aaron Kangas can reach the finals, but he is required to aim for his season best (75.74).
We will also see you in the women’s discus throw Salla Sipponen. The qualifying limit is 64 meters, last year you reached the final with a throw of 61.21 meters. According to Ojaniemi, it is not realistic to expect Sipponen to get a place in the finals, because it would require breaking the record (60.58).
Three Finns compete in the women’s shot put: Eveliina Rouvali, Emilia Fabric and Senja Mäkitörmä. The qualifying limit is 19.10 and last year we reached the final with a result of 18.57. Ojaniemi says that the international level is currently too tough for Finns. Only Rouvali has exceeded the 17-meter mark this season.
Expect surprises in the triple jump
The qualifying limit for the women’s high jump is 194. Last year, you reached the World Cup final with a result of 190, if you exceeded it on the first attempt.
– I believe that Ella Junnila can reach the final. He has been on the rise recently and has topped 190 on a few occasions. Heta from Tuuri stretching and even a new record is required.
According to Ojaniemi, the triple jump also looks interesting for Finns because there is potential. The women’s qualifying limit is 14:30 and the men’s 17:15.
Last year, a result of 14.27 was required for the women’s final, so it is likely that this year too, we will have to jump close to the qualifying mark.
– Senni Salminen and Kristiina Mäkelä haven’t been in the best of shape. I hope they have a good climb now. But doesn’t look very promising based on the jumps this season.
At the World Championships in Eugene, a performance of 16.68 meters was enough for the men’s final. Ojaniemi believes that Aaro Davidila can stretch to the finals, even if his basic level is not yet at that level. Davidila’s record is 16.83 recorded at the beginning of June.
– He is a good Joker card for that qualification and can surprise by going to the final, Ojaniemi states.
