This spring, a pair of shoes is making an impressive comeback, making its mark on the runways and on the feet of all fashionistas. Kate Middleton, as a savvy fashionista, adopted them before anyone else. Focus.

If there’s one comeback that no one saw coming, it’s that of boat shoes. This pair of shoes, imagined by the American Paul Sperry in 1930 to ensure more stability on the deck of your boat, is one of the most desired pieces of the moment.

Over the years, the bourgeoisie has seized it, from former US President John F. Kennedy to Kate Middleton. It’s very simple: since 2011, as soon as the temperatures rise, the Princess of Wales has put on her deck shoes to enjoy relaxed moments, like walking in the sand, strolling in a garden or spending the afternoon with your children.

Is this a consequence of Kate effect ? What is certain is that boat shoes are now fashionistas’ favorite accessory. Its renewed popularity is also directly linked to the advent of the old money style, which has spread to the spring-summer 2024 fashion shows. Miuccia Prada notably relaunched the trend by having models parade dressed in an ensemble composed of an orange leather jacket and skirt with boat shoes during the show Miu Miu.

Outside of the podiums, certain brands have made this great classic their specialty, like TBS or Sebago with its model Docksides. But you can also buy them at Tod’s, Timberland, Bobbies, Clarks or Camper. It must be said that with their soft soles, neutral colors and leather laces, boat shoes are as chic as they are practical.

How to wear boat shoes?

Thanks to their minimalist and elegant design, they go with all spring outfits. They upgrade instantly casual pieces, like linen pants or wide jeans, but also have the power to break the strict side of a suit. To wear them without making a fashion faux pas this season, pair them with oversized Bermuda shorts and a white tank top.

They are also terribly effective when worn with mini shorts, a knitted dress, an XXL T-shirt without anything underneath or even a fringed jacket.
