The most important award in the film festival business is changing hands today: the Palme d’Or in Cannes. In the last two weeks, 21 feature films entered the competition for the main prize of the festival. The jury around Vincent Lindon has now decided who can look forward to the top-class award and the other prizes of the festival.
Of the South Korean Park Chan-wook, who once presented his cult film Oldboy on the Croisette, was awarded the director’s prize this year. His new film Decision to Leave follows a police officer who falls in love with a woman suspected of her husband’s murder. At the Grand Jury Prize, Lindon and his colleagues were undecided. Here both the Palm favorite Close and the critically divided The Stars at Noon received an award.
Cannes 2022: Surprising Acting Awards and Special Prize for 75th Birthday
Surprisingly, the award for Best Actress went to Zar Amir Ebrahimi, who, as a journalist in the serial killer film Holy Spider, is looking for a killer who is targeting prostitutes in Iran. Song Kang-ho was awarded as an actor. The South Korean stars in Hirokazu Koreeda’s Broker. In 2019 he starred in the palm winner Parasite.
Tariq Saleh received the screenplay award for Boy From Heaven, which portrays the power struggle in a religious university in Cairo. For the jury award, the committee around Vincent Lindon decided to award two prizes. Both Eo by Jerzy Skolimowski, told from the perspective of a donkey, and The Eight Mountains by Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix Van Groeningen received awards. The drama Tori and Lokita by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, which tells of the everyday life of a boy and a girl who immigrated to Belgium from Africa, was awarded a special prize at the 75th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival.

Of course, the whole world pays attention to the competition and its Palme d’Or. However, the official program also includes the Un Certain Regard series, which has been presenting “original and unusual films” since 1978, alternating established filmmakers and veterans.
