These are the 50 best horror films of the 2000s

To emphasize it again: We love horror films! And that’s why we couldn’t just do it with ours Top 50 best horror films since 2010 and have now ventured into the decade of the 2000s. For over 2 months we looked at J-Horror, remakes, torture films, French terror films and even a few found footage films to determine the 50 best horror films from 2000 to 2009 from hundreds of contributions. And we guarantee you: you certainly didn’t expect our first place.

Which horror films have we rated?

An exact classification into the horror genre is not always possible, which is why we have excluded some films that are mainly in another genre – such as drama, fantasy or sci-fi – with few horror elements from this list. It is with a heavy heart that we have therefore decided to David Lynch’s fever dream Mulholland Drive, which would otherwise have landed unrivaled in first place. So if you’re missing some great horror films on this list, it’s possible that we assigned them to a different genre and therefore couldn’t include them.

How did we rank the best horror films?

Since the 2000s decade was dominated by many franchises, we decided to only one film per horror franchise to be allowed in our ranking. But how did we even come up with these 50 horror gems? With an eye on versatility, we looked at countless shockers in the streaming video stores and Max’s extensive horror collection and, many weeks later, debated the top 20 of this list together in a discussion group. Places 21 to 50 are our wild cards. This meant that each of us could take turns bringing in our personal favorites. And since our favorite horror films don’t always fit into predefined (sub)genre boxes, we have come up with an individual genre for each film.

And now have fun browsing, discovering, being nostalgically amazed and excited. Let us know in the comments which horror films shaped the 2000s for you.
