In the USA, the nominations for the most important TV award in the world were made: The Emmys. The award has lost relevance in recent years. But right now it is a good indicator of which streaming service and which broadcaster have the highest hit rate in the flood of series. Or to put it another way: where are the best series coming from?
Emmy nominations: Big disappointment for Marvel, Achievements for Squid Game and Stranger Things
The Marvel Universe at Disney+ must accept the next defeat here. Last year, the acclaimed production WandaVision bagged a slew of nominations. However, Disney+’s first exclusive MCU series was ignored at the awards ceremony.
In 2022 things will get even worse: Series like Loki, Moon Knight and Hawkeye already fail the nomination hurdle in the main categories. Especially Loki with Tom Hiddleston could certainly hope for consideration and even had a plan. But a nomination for Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight) would not have been a surprise either.
In the subcategories All eligible MCU series received various considerations, such as What If…?, in a nomination round later that evening. as Best Animated Series, for which the late Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman could also be honored posthumously.
The MCU will be at the Emmy Awards on September 10, 2022 not be represented in the most important categories. MCU boss Kevin Feige has to digest that first. Things are looking better for Netflix and HBO, which appear three and two times, respectively, in the Best Drama Series category alone. (In case you’re wondering, the acclaimed The Boys Season 3 isn’t eligible for the Emmys until next year.)
