An eventful series year is coming to an end and that means: It’s time for a review of the year. Over the past 12 months we’ve sailed across the Eastblue, started studying at Godolkin University, feared clickers and investigated conspiracies in a concrete silo, all while the new album Aurora played on loop in the background.
There were hundreds of new series to discover this year on Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and in the TV programs. But which ones were really worth it? Which series blockbusters and insider tips belong on every watchlist? You can find it in the following ranking the 20 best new series of 2023 arranged according to your rating.
And if you haven’t understood all of the series references above, then the following top 20 will definitely contain one or two highlights that you’ve missed so far.
How does the list of the best series of 2023 come about?
We looked at the Moviepilot community’s ratings for the series of 2023. There were a few during the evaluation Criteria and rules: Only series that were shown for the first time in Germany in 2023 and from were approved at least 100 movie pilots were evaluated. Documentaries and reality formats were left out of this list.
We can already anticipate a big surprise: this year it has not a single series on the Disney+ streaming service made it into the top 20 best series.

Beef
The Netflix series Beef takes a traffic dispute to a whole new level of escalation. Career woman Amy (Ali Wong) always has to be perfect. Danny’s (Steven Yeun) life, on the other hand, is one struggle. In their mutual hatred, they find the ideal release valve for the stress they are exposed to every day – and in the process drag everyone around them into the abyss. The result is a thrilling mix of intense twists, black humor and emotional depth.

Bullshit! The catchphrase of Natasha Lyonne’s hobby detective from the hit series Pokerface has burned itself into pop culture memory in recent months. In the best Columbo style, series creator Rian Johnson created a fantastic Howcatchem crime series after Knives Out and Glass Onion, which, with its classic case-of-the-week structure, conjures up a cozy, nostalgic series feeling. Lyonne’s incarnated lie detector can delight us for many more seasons.
The best series of 2023 – 8th place: Silo

You voted the Apple production as the best sci-fi series of the year silo, which captivates with an exciting dystopia. In the future, the air on the earth’s surface is so toxic that the last 10,000 people now live in a 144-story-deep concrete silo in which a class society with strict laws has developed. With its oppressive setting, the highly exciting and twist-filled story and the strong cast including Dune star Rebecca Ferguson as the gruff Silo investigator, Silo developed into a strong new entry in the sci-fi genre.

Taylor Sheridan is currently one of the busiest series producers in the USA. A total of four new series created by him started at Paramount+ this year. One of them is the Gangster series Tulsa King, which sends Sylvester Stallone, a discarded mafia capo, into exile in Oklahoma, where he wants to build a new criminal empire. Another Sheridan series was able to inspire you even more this year.

After 1883 started with 1923 This year is the second spin-off of the Yellowstone universe written by Taylor Sheridan. In the year of the title, an epic Western saga unfolds around the family of Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren), which takes us from the family ranch in Montana to the wilderness of South Africa.

The fictional music biopic Daisy Jones and The Six examines the success story of a rock band in the 1970s from their meteoric rise to their sudden breakup. It is accompanied by the authentic and often heartbreaking story of addiction, love and desire. In addition, the career of music stars Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy (Sam Claflin) delights with a fantastic catchy soundtrack that we still can’t get out of our heads months later. Another success from Reese Witherspoon’s series empire.

That the fantasy series developed by Joe Cornish Lockwood & Co Being able to finish in third place is a bittersweet success. The story of the young ghost hunters Lucy Carlyle, Anthony Lockwood and George Karim found many enthusiastic fans. But there weren’t enough. Almost four months after its launch, Lockwood & Co suffered the fate of so many Netflix series being canceled. After one season it was over again.
The best series of 2023 – 3rd place: One Piece

Fans of Eiichiro Oda’s manga masterpiece about the pirate Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat gang were trembling. But Netflix has exceeded all expectations and with One Piece finally created a successful live-action anime adaptation. Despite some changes, the Netflix series appropriately adapted the original into the new medium and impressed with a lovingly designed pirate world and extremely charming main characters.
The best series of 2023 – 2nd place: The Last of Us

With The Last of Us HBO and series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have finally created a video game adaptation that is more than worthy of the original. Together with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) we roamed the post-apocalyptic USA, fearing dangerous Cordyceps clickers and having our hearts broken several times. The Last of Us was a series event that hardly anyone could escape. However, there was a series for you this year that could top that.
The best series of 2023 – 1st place: Blue Eye Samurai

Shortly before the end of the year, Netflix has Blue Eye Samurai delivered one of the biggest series surprises of the year. The animated series, set in the 17th century, shines as an extremely brutal samurai adventure with complex characters and impressive action. The breathtakingly designed images, the creative combat sequences and a fantastic soundtrack make Blue Eye Samurai a rare Netflix masterpiece.
