These 3 diseases that kill the most in France

Inserm, Drees and Public Health France have just revealed the leading causes of mortality in France.

According to figures published on December 19 by Inserm, Drees and Public Health France, 660,168 people died in France (49.6% women to 50.4% men) in 2021. fewer deaths than in 2020 because of the global Covid-19 pandemic which was particularly severe that year, but significantly higher than in previous years even taking into account the aging of the population. In their great studythe three instances reveal the medical causes of these deaths. All death certificates of people resident and deceased in France during the year 2021 were considered in this study. Results.

1. Cancer represents a quarter of deaths in France (with 169,910 deaths or 25.7%) and rest the leading cause of death like every year since 2005. Mortality due to tumors has been falling since 2015, with the exception of pancreatic and melanoma cancers, still on the rise. The deadliest cancers are tumors of the trachea, bronchi and lungs with more than 30,000 victims each year. Then come the tumors of the colon, rectum, anus, then those of breast. The median age of people who die from a tumor is 74 years for men And 77 years for women. Half of the deaths concern people between 65 and 84 years old. At the same age, men are 1.7 times more likely to be victims of tumors than women.

Myocardial infarctions on the rise

2. Cardio-neurovascular diseases are the second cause of death in France (with 137,716 deaths, or 20.9%) and the leading cause of death among those aged 85 and over (26.4%). Mortality from these diseases has increased by 2% compared to 2020, after several years of decline. The median age of deaths is 82 years for men and of 89 years for women. Unlike tumors, women die on average more from diseases of the circulatory system than men (72,499 deaths compared to 65,217). Among the cardio-neurovascular diseases that kill the most: heart failurecomplications of heart disease and heart disease and acute myocardial infarctions which are increasing, particularly among men over 85 years old. On the other hand, the stroke (stroke) are stable, after several years of decline.

3. Covid-19 represents the third cause of death in France (with 60,895 deaths, or 9.2%) and still kills mainly elderly people, but less than in 2020 (-12%). People aged 85 or over still represent the majority of deaths due to Covid-19, but their share of deaths decreases in 2021 compared to 2020 (49.6% in 2021, compared to 56.8% in 2020).

Covid-19 alone causes more deaths than all other respiratory diseases combined.

Covid-19 alone causes more deaths than all other respiratory diseases combined. In 2021, the virus killed 32,266 men (53% of deaths due to Covid-19) and 28,629 women. The median age of death from Covid-19 among men is 82 years oldagainst 87 years for women.

Other diseases still kill many

Fourth in the ranking: diseases of the nervous system and sense organs as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s which caused the death of 21,200 women and 14,890 men in 2021. Then, diseases of the digestive system which, between 2020 and 2021, caused 711 additional deaths, while their number had been decreasing since 2015. These are notably cirrhosis, fibrosis and chronic hepatitis which are increasing, mainly among men aged 65 or over. Finally, deaths due to endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases also increased and represent 3.6% of deaths in 2021 (23,844 deaths), whereas they were on a downward trend before the crisis. These include deaths linked to diabetes mellitus, malnutrition and hypovolemia, particularly in the elderly.
