    The UFC-Que Choisir association analyzed 510 articles from a well-known cosmetics brand sold at Lidl. Problem: 17 references contain substances that are prohibited or dangerous to health.

    Vigilance if you are a fan of Cien products, distributed by the Lidl brand throughout France. Generally appreciated for their good value for money, and their composition, 17 references among the 510 analyzed by the UFC-Que Choisir association are nevertheless singled out: they would contain toxic or even prohibited substances.

    What products are affected?

    510 references of the Cien brand were therefore analyzed and classified according to a level of risk ranging from A to D. A when a cosmetic does not present any known risk to date, D when a proven risk is discovered.

    This is therefore the case in 17 products:

    • CIEN Classic Cream;
    • CIEN Sunscreen for children SPF 50 Cien Sun;
    • CIEN Hydro hand cream;
    • CIEN Surgras shower cream;
    • CIEN Aqua – Hydrating Mask;
    • CIEN Deodorant men aqua 48h;
    • CIEN Gold – Anti-Aging Day Cream;
    • CIEN Gold – Anti-Aging Night Cream;
    • CIEN Hand cream – Anti-aging;
    • CIEN Gold – Creme hidratante com triplo efeito;
    • CIEN Gold – Handcream;
    • CIEN Anti-dandruff shampoo;
    • CIEN Almendras – Body milk;
    • CIEN Natural Look – Beach Waves;
    • CIEN White orchid – Sublime luminosity – Eye contour care;
    • CIEN Brown perfect – Highlighter;
    • CIEN Aloe vera – Anti-aging face cream.

    Why are they dangerous?

    The association warns in particular about the presence of butylphenyl methylpropional, also called lilial or BMHCA, an allergen that must be mentioned on the label according to the level of concentration.

    Banned since last year, this allergen “Would be toxic for reproduction and deemed unsafe for use in cosmetics”, indicates the UFC-Que Choisir. It is also suspected of being an endocrine disruptor that can lead to pathologies such as cancer. Two other very powerful allergens were detected: methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone, in the night cream and the moisturizing mask. Finally, some products contain octrocrylene and propylparaben.

    Note however that according to the UFC-Que Choisir scale, other references are quite satisfactory in terms of quality and composition. It is therefore better to pay close attention to it.
