There’s no MMORPG coming to Game of Thrones from Free2Play expert Nexon

Nexon is not supposed to be working on a new MMORPG for Game of Thrones after all. Apparently the inside source was wrong and accidentally turned the already known Netmarble project into a new online role-playing game from Nexon.

Update from May 4, 2024: There has now been an update at Redanian Intelligence. Apparently the source was wrong and accidentally turned the already well-known Game of Thrones MMORPG from Netmarble into a new Nexon project.

What is known about the new MMORPG for Game of Thrones? According to a report from Redanian Intelligence, Nexon’s new online role-playing game is set in the north of Westeros, where Winterfell and the Great Wall lie.

The plot is said to take place between the events of the fourth and fifth seasons of the HBO series of the same name by David Benioff and DB Weiss. Roose Bolton is currently Warden of the North, while Jon Snow and Sam Tarly guard the Wall as members of the Night’s Watch.

Apparently the MMORPG is supposed to offer a story campaign in which you have to choose between a male and female main character – the rejected character should still be involved in the story.

Last but not least, it seems clear that although you will meet well-known characters from Game of Thrones during the course of the campaign, they will not be voiced by the original actors of the series.

Game of Thrones has sparked incredible hype for years – here is the trailer for the first season:

What do I need to know about Nexon? The South Korean publisher released one of the first MMORPGs ever with Nexus: Kingdom of the Winds in 1996. Nexon is also considered a pioneer in the Free2Play sector, as all games from the company, which was founded in 1994, rely on this payment model.

Nexon’s biggest successes include (figures taken from Q2 2022 financial report):

  • Dungeon & Fighter (more than 850 million registered players and more than $20 billion in revenue since 2005)
  • Maple Story (more than 180 million registered players and more than $3 billion in revenue since 2003)
  • KartRider (more than 380 million players on PC and more than $1 billion in revenue since 2004)
  • Nexon also acted as a publisher for various MMORPGs (especially for the Korean region), such as Vindictus, ArcheAge, Final Fantasy XIV, Atlantica Online and Riders of Icarus. Last year we were also able to make an exclamation point with the online shooter The Finals.

    Difficult terrain for MMORPG developers

An MMORPG based on Game of Thrones from Nexon, could that be something? Due to the novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George RR Martin and the aforementioned HBO series, Game of Thrones is certainly one of the most exciting universes for which an online role-playing game could be developed.

Nexon has the expertise, experience and budget to be able to implement such an MMORPG project, but we are skeptical as to whether we can actually get the best possible GoT experience with the Free2Play model and the typical characteristics of Asian developers.

It also remains to be seen whether the project will make it to the finish line or how many years development will ultimately take.

Bigpoint’s Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms, for example, was canceled after many years of development. There is also a big question mark behind Project T from Netmarble, which is also said to be based on the HBO series, as there has been no sign of life here other than a job advertisement for years.
