With the non-linear drama Here, successful director Robert Zemeckis currently has his latest film starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright in US cinemas. For many film fans, nothing beats the adventurous Back to the Future trilogy, which the director himself claims is good the way it is. No fourth part necessary.
However, there is a version of Back to the Future for which the filmmaker would climb back into the director’s chair in a heartbeat if he were allowed to.
Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis wants to adapt the musical into his film
Exists since 2020 Back to the Future: The Musical with music by film composer Alan Silvestri. The musical stage version of the classic sci-fi film initially premiered in Great Britain and also hit Broadway in 2023. As in the first part of the film, it tells how the teenager Marty McFly travels back in time to the 1950s with scientist Doc Brown’s DeLorean time machine, where his mother Lorraine falls in love with him instead of Marty’s father George.
In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Robert Zemeckis revealed that, apart from Roger Rabbit 2, he hardly has any to-do film projects that he would like to check off. But then he thinks of the alternative Back to the Future story:

There is one hurdle, however, and that is the people in the executive suite at Universal, who keep coming back Back to the Future 4 inquire but have no interest in a film version of the musical:
I suggested it to the people at Universal, but they just don’t understand. There’s nothing I can do.
A German version of the Back to the Future musical is not yet in sight, but you can at least watch a trailer for the show online, which is currently being performed in the Westend in London, among other places:
