We’ll have to wait a while until the next Star Wars film hits theaters. However, behind the scenes there are a few projects being planned that are set to hit the big screen in the coming years. In addition to The Mandalorian & Grogu, this also includes a Film about the beginnings of the Jedi and the power.
The film was announced at the Star Wars Celebration 2023. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy brought none other than Indiana Jones 5 director James Mangold on stage to introduce a Star Wars adventure that was then called Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi was described.
Dawn of the Jedi: James Mangold reveals why it was important to him to set the film so far before Episode I
After things had recently become very quiet about the project, Mangold commented on it several times during the press tour for his new film, Like a Complete Unknown: Yes, the Dawn of the Jedi film is still in the works. And there’s a specific reason why it’s set so far in the past.
Mangold’s film is set 25,000 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. The story tells, among other things, how the Jedi learned to use the Force for their own benefit. Mangold explains:
The [Dawn of the Jedi]-Film takes place 25,000 years before all known Star Wars films. This is a period and a playground that I always [erkunden wollte] and who inspired me as a teenager.
He goes on to explain the great advantage of this:
I’m not that interested captivated by so much mythology to be that is almost immobile so that you can’t please anyone.
Mangold consciously chose a Star Wars story that takes place in a time about which next to nothing is known – at least in the established canon. Here he can Let creativity flow and doesn’t have to constantly worry about getting in the way of another Star Wars movie. So promising conditions.
The New Jedi Order film is currently being written by screenwriter Beau Willimon, who previously created series such as House of Cards and The First. He has also been around in the Star Wars universe. Willimon penned the three episodes of the outstanding Narkina 5 arc from the first season of Andor.
When does the Dawn of the Jedi film start in cinemas?
Lucasfilm has not yet set a release date for the Dawn of the Jedi film. Since the project is only in the script phase, there will certainly be move on for another two or three yearsuntil the cinema release becomes concrete. Maybe we’ll get a more concrete update on the state of play at Star Wars Celebration this year.
