Red Dead Redemption 2 is a big game full of little details. A Reddit user noticed one of them. It is a very expensive piece of loot in which Arthur Morgan’s gang was cheated.
What detail is it about? Red Dead Redemption 2 is full of details that not all players discover immediately. There are numerous activities in the game, including stagecoach robberies. As Arthur Morgan, you can go out and rob unsuspecting transports full of valuable loot.
One of these missions involves transporting a painting. It shows US President George Washington. This image is not an invention of the developers at Rockstar Games, but actually exists. In reality it is titled “Washington at Princeton.”
A real lucky find
What is the picture about? Reddit user Bagged_bolts pointed this out because the detail is no small thing. The painting portrays the first president of the United States in 1779, shortly after the Battle of Princeton during the American Revolutionary War.
George Washington managed to defeat the opposing British and Hessian groups victoriously. It is another historical detail that the developers have included. A fantasy approach was originally planned for the Western series.
What’s special about the painting: It’s worth a lot of money. In 2006, it was sold at Christie’s auction house in London for a whopping $21.3 million – the equivalent of around 20.3 million euros.
Today the painting hangs in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and can be viewed there. If the gunslingers from Red Dead Redemption had known earlier how much the picture was worth, they probably wouldn’t have allowed themselves to be ripped off.
Because in the game the painting is sold to the NPC Seamus for a mere $40. This is absurd because the picture was already worth around 643,636 euros in 1899, i.e. at the time of Read Dead 2. So Arthur and Co. would have been pretty annoyed – good thing they obviously don’t understand that much about art.
This story shows once again how loving attention to detail Rockstar Games is when designing their game worlds. Did you know the painting and its value? Feel free to write it in the comments.
