The pollen season is already underway and it is expected to be tough this year.
But if you suspect that you are allergic, you may not be able to get a clear message.
– It is so common. There are better things to spend the money than investigating everyone, says Doctor Marcus Olausson.
Many people have pollen problems. Today, up to 30 percent of the population is pollen allergic. Allergies have increased over the past 50 years and are believed to be due to the fact that we are more clean today, that there are more chemicals in society and the warmer weather.
– Climate change has meant that we have larger doses of pollen for a longer period, says doctor Marcus Olausson.
So do you distinguish allergy from sniff
Many people are uncertain whether you have suffered a cold or have been pollen allergy. But it is not that difficult to decide which is, says Doctor Marcus Olausson.
– In a cold, you often sneeze, but you do not have these repeated sneezes that we have in an allergy. Then you usually sneeze in shock. Then the cold often goes hand in hand with fever and the snuff is usually discolored. Classic in allergy is that it is transparent sniff.
Red, irritated eyes such as itch, cough and respiratory problems and severe fatigue are other classic symptoms of pollen allergy. But how do you find out if you are actually pollen allergies?
– You don’t. This is not something that is the responsibility to investigate. If you think you have pollen allergy – you are sniffy, it itches in your eyes, it is from April to June – then you treat it. We are not investigating this. It is so common that if you were to investigate everyone … there are better things to spend the money on, says Doctor Marcus Olausson.
Start medication already now
Right now it’s a lot of al and hazel, but in just a few weeks the birch comes – the one that most of the pollen allergies react most to. If you are allergic to birch pollen, you should start medication already – as it will take before certain medications have an effect.
The basic treatment consists of classic antihistamine tablets. If you do not get enough effect from them, you add a nasal spray that contains cortisone. If you still have trouble, there is a heavier artillery of treatments to add.
There is much you can do yourself to reduce pollen problems. Like not breathing during the day, just at night. And to change clothes when you get home or shower before you go to bed.
Can pollen allergy be dangerous – like nut allergy?
– Pollen usually does not provide that type of reactions. But if it circulates a lot of pollen it can trigger a severe asthma attack and then it can de facto be dangerous. But that’s not the usual, says Doctor Marcus in News Morning.
