News24 Have talked to Emily Sonestedtassociate professor of nutrition epidemiology at Lund University and assistant professor at Kristianstad University. Sonestedt’s main focus is on clarifying the role of carbohydrate quality, mainly sugar consumption, has on health.

According to Sonestedt, sweeteners can be a better alternative.

– Sweeteners do not contain as much calories as usual sugar. That’s an advantage. Soft drinks are a common example, which contains a lot of sugar and there are alternatives in the form of light soda today. In that case, it is a better alternative if you drink soda often, says Sonestedt and continues:

– The soda has the largest harmful health effect when drinking sugar. It is easy to over -consume and it goes quickly into the blood so in that case it is easy to make an exchange and choose light soda. Then, of course, water is the best option, but if you feel a big suction, light soda is a better choice.

According to Sonestedt, there are some myths about sweeteners that are not right. One myth is that sweeteners cause the sweet -sucking to be triggered and that it makes you more sugar.

– Sweeteners do not make you eat more sugar. Another myth is that you have seen in studies that those who drink a lot of light soda have an increased risk of dying prematurely, but then one should be careful to interpret those studies. Rather, it can be that they have been sick from the beginning, for example overweight and therefore chosen light soda. Therefore, it does not have to be the light soda itself, Sonestedt explains.

Sonestedt says that there are more studies where you have looked at how sweeteners affect health for a few months.

– In these studies, no harmful effects on blood fats or blood pressure from sweeteners have been seen. Rather, a weight loss has been seen in those who choose light products.
