Viktor Gyökeres is Sweden’s best soccer player this year.
It is of course very well deserved after his great year of success.
But the Ballon d’Or should really have gone to Alexander Isak.
This is a comment. The opinions are the writer’s own.
It has been a completely unlikely football year for Viktor Gyökeres. 61 goals in a calendar year is certainly not something to joke about and that places the 26-year-old among the very best goalscorers of all time.
Gyökere’s goal success
The boy from Aspudden has scored a hat-trick against Boavista, a hat-trick against Farense, four goals against Estrela da Amadora and four goals against Azerbaijan, but above all a hat-trick against Manchester City itself in the Champions League. Gyökeres has made a powerful impression in football Europe and absolutely scored goals for Sporting Lisbon.
On Monday evening, he also received the prestigious Golden Ball as Sweden’s best footballer in 2024. It is of course extremely well-deserved and you are a fool if you say otherwise. But!

You still get a sour aftertaste in your mouth and feel that there is a player who deserves the prize more. His name is Alexander Isak and is unfortunately completely forgotten in the context despite a fantastic season in the Premier League.
Isaac deserves it
The 25-year-old made Swedish sporting history when he scored 20 league goals for Newcastle and came third in the scoring league last season. That is the most goals in the Premier League by a Swede ever and three more than what Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored for Manchester United in 2017.

Such a historic achievement cannot be overlooked in contexts like this. Of course it’s not 61 goals like a certain Viktor Gyökeres, but there you also have to compare which teams Isak has faced compared to the goal king in Portugal.
It actually hurts to see Alexander Isak turn 25 and, despite being Sweden’s big attacking star in recent years, still not won the Golden Ball yet. I would have given it to Isak this year because I think his performance is sharper, but Gyökeres is clearly a worthy winner of Sweden’s finest football award.
