For many years, Ronald McDonald the clown was the face of McDonald’s, and every child’s favorite.
But then suddenly the red-haired figure disappeared from the fast food chain.
Scary clown trend
In 2016, an unpleasant trend emerged with clowns scaring people. It started in the USA, and then spread to the rest of the world and then also Sweden.
The trend was simply to dress up as a clown, often in groups, and go out on the town to scare people.
Here you can read an interview where a Swedish clown explains why he went out and was scared.
What happened to Ronald McDonald?
The scary clown trend was also the end of Ronald McDonald. In a statement from 2016 McDonald’s wrote:
“Given the current social climate and feelings surrounding clowns, we want to be careful about bringing Ronald McDonald to events.”
Since then, the once popular red-haired clown has been conspicuous by his absence at McDonald’s.
