Therefore, every other cat in Sweden is uninsured

Therefore every other cat in Sweden is uninsured

In many families, the cat is a dear member and a valued pet. Despite that, only half of the cats in Sweden are insured.

In a survey, 800 cat and dog owners were asked if their pets are insured and the results show that only ten percent of dogs lack insurance, which is a significantly large difference compared to cats.

Each individual pet owner is responsible for taking care of their pet and ensuring that it receives medical care if needed. But Swedish pet owners who instead choose not to insure their cat must instead pay the full amount if the cat needs to see a vet or be medicated.

– It is completely impossible to predict if and when a pet needs to receive animal health care – regardless of whether the animal lived problem-free in the past, says Agria’s business area manager Patrik Olsson in a press release and adds:

– A healthy individual of a healthy breed can have an accident and the situation can quickly change if, for example, he steps on a shard of glass, gets into a fight or chews something inappropriate.

That’s why people don’t insure their dog or cat

In the survey, the most common answers to why one did not insure their animal were:

1. That the animal owner saves money and is responsible for veterinary costs himself.

– Our statistics show that 40 percent of puppies visit the vet during their first year of life. In that case, the savings must be sufficient to treat the new family member. Otherwise, there is a great risk that the pet will be left without veterinary care when it becomes ill or injured.

2. That the cat or dog is healthy and well and thus does not need veterinary care.

– It is completely impossible to predict if and when a pet needs to receive veterinary care – regardless of whether the animal lived problem-free in the past. A healthy individual of a healthy breed can have an accident and the situation can quickly change if, for example, he steps on a shard of glass, gets into a fight or chews something inappropriate, says Patrik Olsson.

3. That the pet is too old.

– An older dog or cat that suffers from an injury or illness that costs a lot to treat but has a good prognosis and can give the animal another time with valuable quality of life. Is it then not worth giving the pet that chance?
