Embracer Group has announced that it will not be making any updates about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake, following extensive layoffs and financial restructuring.
Knights of the Old Republic Remake, or more commonly known as the remake of Star Wars KOTOR, is being developed under the supervision of Embracer Group. However, the company’s recent financial difficulties and large-scale layoffs make the future of the project uncertain.
Embracer Group Won’t Make Updates About Star Wars KOTOR Remake After Layoffs
Embracer Group published its second quarter report, which included important decisions such as the dismissal of 904 employees and the cancellation of some development projects. The company stated that although it has around 200 game development projects as of September 2023, it is trying to reduce costs.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake is one of the most notable projects Embracer has on its hands. This project, also supported by Sony, is being developed specifically for PlayStation 5. However, Saber Interactive, which took over from original studio Aspyr, removed all references and trailers for the project, raising doubts about the game’s future.
Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors has been evasive about the KOTOR remake, raising concerns about the status of the project. Wingefors declined to comment further, saying, “I realize everything I said about this was headline news.”
Embracer announced in May that the project was continuing, but no updates were made after this announcement. In light of corporate unrest and widespread layoffs, there is concern that the next news could be the cancellation of the project.
The promotional trailer for the remake of KOTOR was shown at a PlayStation showcase event in 2021. However, Bloomberg’s report dated 2022 revealed that Sony and Lucasfilm were unhappy with the project, which led to the postponement of the game. Later, information was shared that Saber Interactive took over the development process.
This is disappointing for fans who were eagerly waiting for the KOTOR remake. If a remake of the game does not materialize, realizing it as a TV series or movie trilogy could be an alternative path for fans of the series.
