A submarine carrying tourists to the Titanic wreck is missing in the Atlantic, The British broadcasting company BBC says. According to the US Coast Guard in Boston, there is a search and rescue operation led by the Coast Guard.

OceanGate, the company that owns the submarine, has confirmed the disappearance and said that the search is ongoing. the BBC and CNN’s according to the US Coast Guard has confirmed that the submarine is carrying five people, which is the maximum possible number of passengers for the vessel.

The company says it will do everything it can to bring those on board back safely. According to media reports, one of those on the submarine is a British businessman Hamish Harding. According to Reuters, Harding’s relatives have confirmed on social media that he is among the passengers. Harding himself had also announced on Facebook his intentions to participate in the submarine trip the day before the event.

The U.S. Coast Guard told Reuters that communications with the submarine were lost about an hour and 45 minutes after the ship began diving toward the Titanic wreck.

Small submarines have occasionally taken tourists to the bottom of the sea to see the wreck of the Titanic, which is located about 600 kilometers from the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The wreck lies on the seabed at a depth of 3,800 meters.

For the eight-day tourist trip to the wreck, it has been allowed to pay 250,000 dollars, or about 229,000 euros.

The Titanic sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic. The ship took about 1,500 people with it into the depths. Only about 700 of the passengers were saved. More than 60 Finns also traveled with the Titanic, of which only 20 were saved.

The wreck was only discovered in 1985.
