Shots have been fired near Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in Florida, Trump’s campaign team said on Sunday.
Trump is safe, says campaign communications director Steven Cheung in a short announcement. According to media reports, Trump was playing golf at his club in West Palm Beach. The field was immediately closed.
Information about what happened is contradictory. The news agency Reuters reports that according to police sources, the secret service opened fire on the suspect in the shooting and that several shots were fired in the situation. News agency AP says that a weapon similar to an assault rifle was found in the area.
News channel CNN says, citing official sources, that Trump would have been the target of the shooting. The New York Post, on the other hand, tellsthat two people were shooting at each other outside Trump’s golf club and that the shooting was not aimed at Trump.
The Secret Service is investigating the incident together with the Palm Beach County Police, says Anthony Guglielmi, communications manager for the United States Secret Service in the X message service.
Concerns have been raised about Trump’s safety since he was injured in an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on July 13.
