There was a falling out between master director Martin Scorsese

As Sergeant Dignam, Mark Wahlberg shouts and insults his way through Departed. Even though he doesn’t play the lead, his performance stands out because of it vulgar kind definitely in mind. Wahlberg even received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor thanks to The Departed.

From the outside looking in, it looks like his involvement in the film was a huge success for his career. In a new edition of the interview podcast Happy Sad Confused, Wahlberg gives a look behind the scenes and describes one unfortunate conflict with director Martin Scorsese.

Mark Wahlberg and Martin Scorsese had several problems with The Departed, including Wahlberg’s hair

Anyone who has seen The Departed will not only remember Sergeant Dignam’s abusive language and angry eyes. Also his hairstyle caused a stir when it was released in cinemas and was hotly discussed. As it turns out, Wahlberg’s idiosyncratic hair style was also a point of contention between the star and Scorsese.

Wahlberg says:

I tried to grow my hair, that’s why I had this weird hair. Everyone asks what the wig was all about. I said it wasn’t a wig, I was just trying to grow my hair out for the next film.

Before The Departed, Wahlberg made the film Four Brothers. His next project was actually supposed to be Invincible – The Dream of His Life, in which Wahlberg Football player Vince Papale embodied. And he had long hair. Ultimately, however, production was delayed and The Departed got in the way.

The production of The Departed took all of Martin Scorsese’s energy and Mark Wahlberg’s hair was just too much

Wahlberg didn’t want to be a part of The Departed at first because he originally auditioned for another role that he didn’t get. “We had a few [Probleme]”, the actor admits to Happy Sad Confused host Josh Horowitz. But he also understands why Scorsese was so tense.

Wahlberg elaborates on his thought:

[Martin Scorsese] had to take care of Jack [Nicholson] he had to take care of Matt [Damon] and Leo [DiCaprio] and Alec [Baldwin] take care. And everyone who was part of the studio and the rest of the cast.

The Departed turned out to be more complicated than expected for Wahlberg:

I should be ready in five weeks. So I went off to shoot Invincible, got my hair extensions, came back and then it was like, ‘Oh, you have to take the extensions out.’ I said: ‘[Dieser] Shit took eight hours. I won’t take this out.’

Scorsese himself has indicated several times that the creation of The Departed was a… strenuous act was, from the beginning of the project to post-production. In the end, Scorsese was rewarded with the only directing Oscar of his career.
