There was a big power outage in Sweden this morning

Due to the power outage, subway traffic was also at a standstill in Stockholm. The cause of the power outage is not yet known, but it is estimated to have started during maintenance work.

In Sweden, due to a power outage in the early morning on Wednesday, the nuclear power reactors Forsmark 1 and 2 located in Östhammar had to be shut down.

– Due to the loss of electricity supply, we cannot use the reactors and generate electricity, Forsmark’s press manager Josef Nylén told for the public broadcasting company SVT. (you switch to another service)

Nuclear power plants are a significant part of Sweden’s electricity production.

The power outage occurred around 6:40 local time. In Stockholm, metro traffic had stopped for almost an hour, according to Stockholm’s transport authorities. Traffic may still be disrupted.

The transmission of the SVT1 channel was also interrupted, but then returned to normal.

The power outage apparently happened during a maintenance break

According to the Swedish Energy Agency, the power outage occurred during maintenance work.

– The maintenance work has gone wrong and caused a short circuit, says the representative of the energy company Robert Sennerda for Aftonbladet magazine. (you switch to another service)

Forsmark 1 and 2 are still disconnected from the power grid, says press manager Nylén.

– Our backup power systems work as they should, but because we lost the power supply, we cannot use the reactors and generate electricity, says Josef Nylén.

The Forsmark 3 reactor is still operating.

According to the company, tests and inspections must be done on the first and second reactors before they can be restarted.

MTV: Sweden’s blackout also caused disruption in Finland

In Finland, MTV news reports that the Swedish outage was also felt in Finland.

It caused, among other things, a stoppage at a forest industry factory on the west coast of Finland, Fingrid tells MTV Uutis.
